Philosophy, psychology, science, art and literature all contribute to our pursuit of Truth and the life that we are called to live, to the adventure of discovering the world and our place within it. The Author of the universe speaks to us through many means, and we try to attune our minds to all of them here, to discover and live the Way to Life through the Word, spoken, written and experienced. It IS possible to have respect for science, a fully rational outlook, a 21st century worldview AND be Christian. We examine C. S. Lewis's essay, "The Funeral of a Great Myth." I argue that Lewis was premature to announce this myth's death, and that what he calls the Myth is actually the Hegelian philosophical worldview that has come to dominate our culture.

We examine Lewis's essay, originally entitled "Onward Christian Spacemen" by his publisher, but renamed by Walter Hooper, "The Seeing Eye." In our series, "The Evident, Evidence and Faith," we also addressed the issue of why some find God everywhere, and some find Him nowhere, why for some everything is evidence for His existence, and for some there is no evidence. The search for Reality, Truth and Beauty either draws us ever deeper into the glorious Mystery, or claims to dissipate it in the pretense of knowledge. The first attitude is that of Socrates and Western theism, the latter that of gnostic scientism and atheism, which pervades our socio-cultural world today.

Jenny and I complete our series on Hegel. In this episode we discuss the "Ugly Hegel," those Hegelians who followed the logic of Hegel's positions to the devastation of our Western world. About ten minutes into this episode we abandon the more didactic approach we've been following throughout this series and turn to C. S. Lewis' Perelandra to exemplify the problem.
Lewis was a convert to Christianity from Idealism, and he was intimately acquainted with its pernicious thought-structures and seductive logic. The character of the great physicist, Weston, in the second book of the Space Trilogy, represents the pervasive influence of Hegelian doctrine within the academic world of his day. Join us as we see Hegelian thinking portrayed by one of the twentieth century's most incisive thinkers.

Uriah, Job ... and Frodo. Part of being human is passing moral judgments. There are proper and improper ways of doing this. We look at the story of David and Uriah, and of Job. These stories tempt us to judge God, which requires us to take HIS position, His moral authority, His righteousness. We do this same thing in judgment of our fellow human beings. In doing so, we set ourselves up in our arrogance AS GOD, the very position of Satan himself, the pathology of Cain. This arrogation of God's position becomes a central theme for us moving forward with the Christian Atheist. We exemplify it in Tolkien's LORD OF THE RINGS in the character of Frodo as he interacts with Gandalf.

Jenny and I continue to discuss (and try to simplify) our series on Hegel. In this episode we discuss the "Bad Hegel" (Part 2) which is vital to understanding Hegel's hidden and pernicious influence in today's world. This is the critical episode in our simplifying Hegel series.
In our series on atheism I discovered that credal atheists represent a very limited threat to theism, both because their intellectual position is weak, being ungrounded, and because what most Enlightenment atheists really want and how they act tends to betray their credal stance. This sort of atheist is only about 5% of the US population, though significantly more in Europe.
What our two-track Hegelian definition of atheism also reveals, though, is that there is a far more robust and pernicious manifestation of the spirit of atheism, one that has been with us for a very long time but has never reached such broad acceptance before in the Western world. Its modern incarnation, I claim, finds its origin in the philosophy of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. This is probably the most important explanatory episode in our series The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Hegel, also called "The Implosion of the West."

Jenny and I discuss (and try to simplify) our series on Hegel. In this episode we discuss the "Bad Hegel," which is vital to understanding Hegel's hidden and pernicious influence in today's world. This is the critical episode in our simplifying Hegel series.
In our series on atheism I discovered that credal atheists represent a very limited threat to theism, both because their intellectual position is weak, being ungrounded, and because what most Enlightenment atheists really want and how they act tends to betray their credal stance. This sort of atheist is only about 5% of the US population, though significantly more in Europe.
What our two-track Hegelian definition of atheism also reveals, though, is that there is a far more robust and pernicious manifestation of the spirit of atheism, one that has been with us for a very long time but has never reached such broad acceptance before in the Western world. Its modern incarnation, I claim, finds its origin in the philosophy of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Jenny and I conclude our discussion on a phenomenon we've observed on the contemporary scene in which committed members of the political left find an issue that has "crossed the line" for them, and rebel from the proposed orthodoxy, usually seeing only this issue as problematic, or as having a particular origin in recent times that is wrong and must be addressed, but missing the larger sense in which these problems are the natural logical outplay of the logic of the left, the ideology of Hegelianism/Marxism/Critical Theory/Wokism.

Our second interview with Matt Matias of MemeLord Monday. This time we discuss the historic Supreme Court Dobbs decision overturning Roe vs. Wade, which we covered extensively on the Christian Atheist and No Compromise. The entire decision, including the Dissent (Justices Kagan, Sotomayor, and Breyer) and additional opinions by Justices Thomas, Kavanaugh and Roberts was read aloud in order to inform the public on the facts of the case.

Jenny and I continue to discuss a phenomenon we've observed on the contemporary scene in which committed members of the political left find an issue that has "crossed the line" for them, and rebel from the proposed orthodoxy, usually seeing only this issue as problematic, or as having a particular origin in recent times that is wrong and must be addressed, but missing the larger sense in which these problems are the natural logical outplay of the logic of the left, the ideology of Hegelianism/Marxism/Critical Theory/Wokism.
"here's a question: does big picture, abstract thinking cause liberals to be less happy because they are removing themselves from the embodied here and now? After all, the ability to live in the moment and appreciate our lives as they exist does seem to be a key ingredient in day-to-day contentment. Or is it conservatives' concern with lasting marriage, strong family cohesiveness, and day-to-day sociality that tips the scales toward greater daily contentment and happiness?" John's interview with Michael Wiseman of THE BIBLE SAYS WHAT?!? podcast.
Michael represents an atheist worldview that has not yet thought deeply enough about the issues to find the dependence of human reason on divine reason, and who rejects, as I did, the notion that atheism represents a faith position. I truly enjoyed chatting with him. He was warm and human, and my interactions with him both before and after the podcast were not just respectful but genuinely friendly. He has been hurt, I think, by churchianity and well-meaning Christians. God understands that, and the path from atheism back to Christ is, I think, a shorter and more direct one than that from a self-satisfied agnosticism. Michael seemed genuinely curious, and not just contemptuous as he often comes across. I liked him immediately, and found nothing in my interactions with him to contradict my initial impressions. Cheers, Michael! Keep asking, seeking and knocking!

Jenny and I are taking the week off to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The success of our No Compromise conversations, in which I always say, "Qu'ils sont beaux, lex pieds" to introduce my Jenny, is here explained. Jenny was God's gift of grace to me, my path back to His arms. On Valentine's Day 2022, we posted my original poem to Jenny on our Simple Gifts podcast. We repost that episode here on the Christian Atheist.
Qu'ils sont beaux les pieds, "How Beautiful are the Feet" (Isaiah 52:7; Romans 10:15) is my love song to my Jenny this Valentine's Day! My love has only grown exponentially since we married. My one earthly goal is to spend every available second with her!
Yeats' poem "He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven" was my foundational poetic influence in writing this piece, but there were many, many more, some of which I trace out in this episode.

Qu’ils Sont Beaux Les Pieds
I have spread my dreams under your feet
For they speak to me of Golden Mean
Of swirls and curly fractal stream
Scent, sight, tactile complete
Complement-whorl in all ways meet
You, transcendent cloth in immanent flesh-
I, being poor, naught can commend
But dreams of you I receive and send -
The clothes of heaven in poverty dress
Unless thus enrobed your feet shall press
Upon my dreams
Tread softly, my Love, for what dreams may come
Through which our mortal coils may travel
Roads taken & not taken ravel & unravel
Though past is past, it is not the sum
For Time is not an unbroken arrow
Parallel treks we’ve trod in struggle
Converge in One a history double
Time-tethered we, within our marrow,
Revise what was through what will follow
From Pieds Beaux you spiraling rise
Tripped too often by syncopated schism
Now dance with me in measured rhythm
To theme-captured melody from your eyes
Woven with dreams in cloths of skies

Uncle Andrew in The Magician's Nephew exemplifies in one brief vignette ALL that I have been attempting to say in our series, "The Evident, Evidence and Faith."
Here is presented in a pellucid literary picture the nature of faith, of the evident, and evidence.
William Blake wrote: “We are led to believe a lie/When we see not thro’ the eye.”
This couplet exemplifies how contemporary thinking (especially among the elite) is anti-empiricist, anti-science and anti-rational, and why Western society seems to be committing suicide.
