106 Chatterview with Dr. Charles Howell of Youngstown State University, Part 2

Chatterview Part 2

Sometime in the last year, I received another request to put our podcast series, "The Machinery of the Looking-Glass" into book form. We did so, leading us to this conversation with Dr. Charles Howell of Youngstown State University, Dean of the Beeghly College of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, and Education, in which we discuss our book, his testimony and his manuscript memoir on his journey to Christ later in life, which mirrors our own in interesting ways, the status of education and academia, and many other topics. Thank you, Dr. Howell, for this joyful conversation, your powerful testimony to God's goodness, and your friendship with The Christian Atheist!

This review from Dr. Howell of our Through the Looking Glass appears on Amazon:

"This memoir raises important questions about the grounds of faith. Wise was brought up a Christian, attended seminary, then renounced his faith and went on to become an atheist and a professor of philosophy. A personal crisis in his early fifties led him to question, and ultimately to reject, the reasoning that led him to atheism. The book raises many important themes: God’s action in our lives, the impossibility of deciding questions of faith based solely on reason, the dependence of morality on the existence of God, and (perhaps most important) the seductiveness of a humanistic world view and its ultimate inability to satisfy our most basic human needs.

Wise is an excellent writer. The chapters in the book are clear, well-organized, and concise, reflecting the structure of the podcasts on which they are based. If you haven’t read philosophy before, you will likely find passages on Plato, Socrates, Kant, and Sartre challenging, but readers who persevere will find the effort rewarding. You can get the gist of the argument without following every detail of philosophical reasoning.

The chapters on the author’s personal crisis—disappointing the expectations of family, the illness and death of his wife, and falling in love in his fifties—are powerful and compelling, demonstrating some of the ways in which faith is grounded in life experience."

THANK YOU, Dr. Howell!
